JOB OPENING: GENERAL MANAGER

The Daily Orange, Corp. is an independent, New York State Not-For-Profit corporation recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS. The Corporation publishes The Daily Orange student-led newspaper, the website www.dailyorange.com, and other specialty publications with a focus on Syracuse University news. The General Manager is the Chief Financial Officer. The General Manager is hired by and reports to the Board of Directors.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The General Manager (hereinafter “GM”) supervises a 25-person student and part-time professional business staff including those in the advertising, distribution, IT, office staff and other temporary project staff. There are an additional 40 student editorial employees.
The GM is responsible for maintaining current and developing new revenue-producing products and strategies to maintain and increase income from print, digital, special events, donations, and grants. The GM is responsible for investigating and implementing means to trim or eliminate current expenses.
The GM oversees and conducts the entire business operations of the company including: sales, payroll, accounts receivable/payable, distribution, technology, and purchasing. The student staff has complete editorial independence.
The GM submits an annual budget to the Board of Directors for approval. The GM maintains budget compliance and tracking, reports any variations to the board and submits a mid-year full report.
The GM does not supervise the editor-in-chief (who is also the President of the Board of Directors) nor is involved in the editorial content of the print and digital publications. The GM does work directly with the advertising staff to produce content for the special advertising supplements and sections.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated understanding and experience of the technologies that are re-shaping the digital publishing industry.
- Experience with extending the reach, engagement and influence of digital and printed publications.
- Professional experience in media sales, business management and budget development.
- Demonstrated experience with collaborating with employees whom you do not supervise (specifically the editor-in-chief and managing editor) to balance the needs of the corporation.
- Prior experience in student media at the college level preferred
- Prior experience in fundraising preferred
SALARY
Salary commensurate with experience, though expected to be in the $40,000 to $50,000 range plus bonuses. Benefits including contribution to health, dental, and retirement plans.
